Mindset: We hear this word used so often, especially in our industry. I truly believe that mindset is one of the biggest driving forces behind one’s success. Your mindset is a combination of your belief system, your attitude and your habits, and it has a major impact on how you think and feel in certain situations. So how does this apply to you behind the chair and when building your business? For starters, having a strong business mindset allows you to see opportunity in the toughest times. It allows you to focus on the solution as opposed to the problem. Further, it allows you to believe that no matter what obstacles are thrown your way, you will do whatever it takes to overcome them.
That said, no matter how hard we try to be positive and see the best in situations, we all get mentally tired and experience moments of burnout and exhaustion. As a stylist you are giving so much of yourself to each client, which makes it very easy to become mentally and physically spent. You must listen to yourself, take a step back, hit the reset button and evaluate your mindset—this will allow you to refocus and pour some love and energy back into yourself. Here are three tips to help you get started on this journey.
1. Journal
Grab a pen and notebook and start to list out all the elements that are draining your energy. Write about any negative thoughts you want to get out of your system; it helps in clearing the mind, releasing and refreshing.
2. Reassess your daily habits and behaviors
What are you doing daily that could be a factor to you feeling burned out? Are you working too many hours? Are you saying yes to things you want to say no to? Are you working on your days off just to please your clients? These things can easily contribute to mental fatigue, and I suggest creating more structure and forming some boundaries. I know it’s tough, but pick one area of focus. Maybe you stop coming in on your days off. Maybe you create consistent work hours. Whatever you decide, start now.
3. Unplug
The best way to make a mindset shift is to unplug. Enjoy quiet time with yourself. Take a break from social media and disconnect from all work-related matters for a day or more. This allows you to reflect on your goals and can help you feel more clear-headed.
