The negative often outweighs the positive on social media, and it's all too easy to become defensive.
We asked our Instagram followers how they remain calm and kind throughout difficult conversations on social media.
On Having A Thick Skin:
@high_off_nails: Being in the arts, you have to be able to take criticism–not get defensive. Allow people to say what they want. Delete [a post or comment] if it bothers you, but don’t start an argument. You have to have thick skin in this world. You can’t please everyone.
On Dealing With Trolls:
@stinasculpts: I usually match their energy, and they either try to get sympathy or report me.
On Viewing a Negative Comment or Post:
@kelseysklaws: Honestly, I take one look at it, delete and block; I don’t need any negativity in my life. I also feel that if you respond, you’re just leaving it open for more hate and more trolls to join in–not worth it.
@moonchild.nails: If I see anyone being racist, misogynistic, homophobic, transphobic, xenophobic–the list can go on–I go OFF. Unfortunately, ignoring these behaviors means you are tolerating them. People know better than to bring that nonsense to my page. I am NOT afraid to lose a sponsor or a client over defending the basic rights of humans! I am a person before a nail artist, and I will always keep it real. My page is not run by a robot!
The Alternative Route:
@yaaas_get_nailed: Staying “calm and kind” in the face of things like racism, homophobia, misogyny and transphobia is why so many people think it’s OK to be that way.
Perhaps The Best Advice To Avoid Social Media Drama:
@lbc_lolo: Don’t get on it.
