Dolce & Gabbana Fall 2013Courtesy of Andreea AngelescuDuring the height of ’90s minimalism, designer duo Dolce & Gabbana took a different tact: pour on the glamour—the more embellishments, the better. That maximalist approach defined their aesthetic, an all-out feast for the eyes that often celebrated their Mediterranean heritage and love of romance.
A Dolce & Gabbana piece often bears an intricate print—think a Geisha Queen of Hearts or religious iconography—dripping in sequins, studs, glitter and crystals; the shinier, the better. Even tracksuits show off exhaustive shimmer! And while their clothing certainly grabs attention, the brand is equally adept at head-dressing, in particular, with gilded and bejeweled crowns fit for a queen. All of this detailing certainly fits the mold of maximalist nail design, especially for artists who love a good crystal and stud. Guest artist Crystal Nguyen just so happens to be one of those manicurists; she often emblazes her nail art with oversize crystals, chains, caviar bullion, studs and gold rococo-style flourishes. Take a note from her masterworks: Artfully frame hand painting or decals with gilded pieces and smartly sprinkled stones and pearls where appropriate. The result: truly royal nails.
