Spooky season is here once again, which means now is the perfect time to get creative and over the top with your nail sets.
When we saw the work from Tyler Coxon (@vanitynailsbyty), we knew they were worth sharing.
Coxon got started off in nails when a local training academy was offering a course for a level 3 qualification.
“I’d always loved getting my nails done, and at the time, I had just started working as a makeup artist and decided to take the course in my spare time, not thinking much of where it would take me,” Coxon shares. “After finishing the course, I invested in a kit from Amazon and started off doing nails on my family to practice. After doing my aunt’s nails for the first time, she asked if I could try and paint a leopard print design. I was never good at anything to do with art/design, so I never imagined I’d be capable, but I completed the set and discovered a love for hand-painting nail art and went from there! I have recently switched to content creating full time and taking orders for custom sets of press-on nails from all around the world.”
In the future, Coxon hopes to offer classes for nail art to help others who are just starting out and want to enter the fabulous world of nails.
Below, you can learn more about what inspires Coxon and learn some tips and tricks to bring your spooky sets to the next level.
Q&A:
Nailpro: What inspires your nail art?
Tyler Coxon (TC): I mostly decide on the spot with what set I want to do and typically freestyle my designs with an idea of a character or theme, then picture a set in mind of what I could make from it!
Nailpro: What do you like most about creating Halloween/spooky nail sets?
TC: The thing I like most about doing spooky/Halloween nail sets is that I can fully express myself in the form of my art. I love doing designs that are on the weird and fun side and people wouldn’t typically see outside of spooky season. Also, I like learning more about what I am capable of achieving and pushing myself to step outside of my comfort zones.
Nailpro: Do you have any tips/tricks for any of these sets?
TC: My biggest tip would be to invest in a set of good quality brushes. A longer liner brush will help steady your hand to create cleaner linework, a smaller liner brush will help you with the fine details and a shading/blending brush will help you discreetly clean up any mistakes and also help with blending any shading work on your designs.
Nailpro: What are your must have tools for creating these nail looks?
TC: I would definitely invest in high quality products! This will significantly improve the quality of your work and reduce the time it takes you to achieve them, taking your art to the next level. All of the products and brushes I use are from NailzbyDev Shop, as they are specifically designed for artists by artists who know what products are needed to achieve great results, which is what I love most about the brand!
Nailpro: What is your favorite medium for nails in general?
TC: My favorite medium has got to be gel polish. You can create any color from mixing using color theory, and whether you’re color blocking a whole nail or using it for nail art, you can use it for everything.
Nailpro: What looks/styles/trends do you think will be popular for spooky season?
TC: Definitely a lot of horror movie characters and Tim Burton characters, but you can make any character spooky and great for a Halloween set with a few changes, such as their outfit! I also expect to see a lot of 3D nail art, which I’m super excited for!
