Designers practiced string theory this season, outfitting frocks in streams of thread, chain or sequins that quivered beautifully with every step. At Marchesa, a cascade of multicolor fringe dared the wearer to whirl nonstop (knots be damned!), while swinging chain tassels dotted a black sheath at Christian Siriano—providing some serious Boomerang-approved motion. Traditional tiers of fringed thread (at Erin Fetherston) and sequins (at Rochas) fulfilled the expected flapper vibe, but it’s the more innovative adaptations of this twirl-happy trend that got onlookers shimmying and shaking in anticipation. One such instance: At Emilio Pucci, a sun hat’s floppy brim spilled printed fringe and, as the model walked, the fringe flicked and flittered, breaking up the pattern in a hypnotizing dance.
You can create a similar dazzling look on nails by incorporating artsy fringe elements like guest artist Gracie J. Finish nails with a layer of tiny loose chains or adhere embroidery thread in swooping layers, keeping the threads’ ends free to shake. Or, pierce nails with long, dangling linked chains so when clients twirl, their nail art can get in on the fun, too!
Guest Artist: Gracie J is the key nail artist for TNT’s “Claws” as well as the designer behind TheEditorial- Nail, where she curates trendsetting nail art on and off set.
