It's sandal season, and none of us want our clients to get out there with callused feet! The good news is you don't have to file endlessly with a foot file during a pedicure to give your clients the baby soft feet they want. In this how-to video, we went to the experts at Podosafe to show us how you can give clients beautiful, baby soft feet in 8 steps and with less energy output for you. Read on to find out just how easy callus removal can be!
*Important Information: If your clients nail, toe or sole of the feet has any open wounds, infection, extremely dry skin (psoriasis/eczema) or signs of inflammation, do not perform the service and recommend them to a dermatologist or podiatrist. Always wear disposable gloves and a face mask (optional). During this process you can begin to examine your client’s feet, as one foot often has more calluses than the other. Start wrapping the foot with the least amount of calluses, as the second foot will soak longer because of the time required to do the first one.
Items You Will Need
• PodoSafe Callus Softener
• PodoSafe Cuticle Softener
• Plastic film roll
• Cotton rounds
• Curette with retractor
• Disposable foot files
• Towel/paper towel for drying
• Skin moisturizer if desired
Step 1. On a dry feet, spray PodoSafe directly into a piece of cotton or cotton round and apply it to calluses only. This will ensure that there will not be any overspray in the air, maximizing its use. Do not spray PodoSafe directly on the foot, as it tends to run down, wasting product.
Step 2. Use plastic wrap to keep cotton rounds in place, while also keeping the foot warm. Be careful not to over tighten the plastic wrap more than necessary. The time it takes for the product to act varies by temperature (clients with cold feet will take a little longer) and the amount of calluses, but on the average around 7 minutes is the recommended soaking time. Tip: If the callus is very accentuated, or if the clients feet is cold, you may wrap them in aluminum foil or utilize a thermal pads to warm feet to get the best use out of the product. You may also, very lightly, rub cuticle oil on heavy calluses. PodoSafe reacts with it and makes the process faster. Be aware that too much oil will seal the area and will not allow PodoSafe to penetrate.
Step 3. While waiting for the product to interact with the calluses, use PodoSafe, packed in an eye drop bottle, to remove cuticles. There’s no soaking time to remove cuticles. Apply a couple of drops to each toe and make sure to maintain them wet during the process. Use the cuticle pusher while cuticles are moist without applying a lot of pressure, which may create waves and marks on the nail. The side of the cuticle pusher is used to remove softened calluses when working on the feet. While pushing back cuticles, keep the pusher as horizontal as possible, laying on the nail bed, making swift and delicate movements. Use a curette to push the cuticles back and scoop them off starting from the middle of the toe to the outer edge. This can be done on fingernails as well, eliminating the need for nippers.
Note: Many people believe they have an ingrown nail on the corner of their big toe, but in most cases, they have ingrown skin. This is known as onicofosis. To remove this, soften the ingrown skin, and in soft and successive movements, clean the corner, always from the middle to the top.
Step 4. After soaking the calluses for 7 to 10 minutes, remove the plastic wrap and cotton. Use the side of the cuticle pusher, or even a spoon to scrape off dissolved calluses. The longer you leave the product, the softer the calluses will get. People with cold feet may need additional soaking time and you may also wrap the feet with “warm” towel to expedite the process. Repeat this process until all melted calluses are removed.
Step 5. Using our innovative disposable foot file, gently buff the remaining calluses. You will notice that once the product dries up, the calluses will stop rolling off.
Step 6. Clean the feet well with water. Be generous and thorough, using a basin with warm water, or a water sprayer to wash off the remaining product that’s left of the feet, and if exfoliated, the granules from the product. Dry the foot with disposable towels.
Step 7. Simply discard the plastic sleeve that holds the file after finishing both feet. There’s no need to sterilize the handle, as the sleeve completely encapsulates the handle, making it the most sanitary product in the industry.
Step 8. Apply your favorite skin moisturizer.
Note: If client had heavy calluses, and in need of a second treatment, wait a week before the second treatment. Gentle treatment with longer intervals will curb down callus growth, as the body won’t react adversely and create even more calluses to protect skin.
