Sally Hansen Global Color Ambassador Madeline Poole created the nails for DKNY. “We wanted a playful look that mixes it up with a graphic design and tones from the 90's,” explained Dao-Yi Chow and Maxwell Osborne, DKNY Creative Directors. Says Poole, “When I think of DKNY, I think of the cool inspiration of the 90's, the color palette of black, gray, white, neutrals, and strong graphic shapes. I knew the nails needed to feel equally sharp. The girls each have their own personality, a variety of hair styles and thus, a variety of nail styles as well. Using two colors, Sally Hansen Complete Salon Manicure in Dark Hue-mor, a deep navy and Sally Hansen Complete Salon Manicure in Commander in Chic, a muddy gray-purple, we created four different nail looks which will be randomly applied to the girls backstage. Every girl will have a unique combination of flare.”

This season’s Brandon Maxwell girl is a little rough around the edges and wears casual, messy hair. Lippmann shares, “This is the type of girl who wouldn’t put much time into the perfect mani, so her color of choice would need to be quick to apply and easy to pull off with anything in her wardrobe. Manicurist Gina Edwards for KISS Products, Inc. created gold glitter faded nails for the Carmen Marc Valvo F/W 2016 Collection for New York Fashion Week on February 16, 2016.

The painterly vision of the Vienna Secession serves as the inspiration for Carmen Marc Valvo Fall 2016 Collection, combining floral flourishes with geometric industrial accents. 

Gina Edwards for KISS Products, Inc. lightly polished gold KISS Nail Artist Paint onto nude nails.  "This glitter fade effect adds some ‘sparkle’ to an otherwise classic manicure," says Edwards.

Femininity finds structure at Tanya Taylor where the women is elegant and beautiful with a wandering, active mind. Morgan Taylor Lacquer lead artist Danielle Candido created a gradient manicure to capture the boundary-less mood of the collection. The rust-colored base is created by layering burgundy From Paris With Love and Orange You Glad then Little Black Dress is sponged onto the tips for a natural fade. Need for Speed top coat adds a subtle luster.

Celebrity manicurist Lisa Logan created the nail look for the Baby Ghost show this evening using Red Carpet Manicure Lacquers.

The look featured an exaggerated stiletto shape and Red Carpet Manicure nail lacquer in the on-trend shade of Natural Talent.

The Sally LaPointe woman is sophisticated and cool. Morgan Taylor lead artist Danielle Candido created a frosted white manicure to reflect the various textures and neutrals seen throughout the collection. Created using Heaven Sent and topped with Matte's a Wrap, the look has its moment with a gold stud placed just below the moon of the nail.

The Monique Lhuillier Fall 2016 collection is an artistic expression of an eccentric woman who is cool, relaxed and rock 'n' roll. Complementing the rich color palette in the fabrics, Morgan Taylor Lacquer lead artist Gina Edwards created a sophisticated soft rosy-pink manicure with Polished Up and Make It Last. The demure nails add elegance to the Monique Lhuillier woman.

Manicurist Marisa Carmichael for Formula X created the classic look for the Mansur Gavriel FW’16 presentation. She applied a luxe red polish to some models for the perfect pop of color and a neutral, ivory gray to other models for a clean and simple color to complement the collection.

Celebrity manicurist Lisa Logan created an on-trend marbled nail look for the Claudia Li NYFW show using Red Carpet Manicure Lacquers.

To achieve the look at home:

1. Apply one coat of RCM Clingy Base Coat.
2. Apply one coat of RCM Natural Talent; let dry completely.
3. Using a piece of a damp makeup sponge, lightly press on RCM Plum Up The Volume to create a marbled effect; dab on RCM White Hot the same way to soften the look; let dry.
4. Apply one coat of RCM Shine On Top Coat to merge the colors together and to add a high gloss finish.

Christian Siriano collaborated with Jamberry to create 2 custom nail wrap designs for the unveiling of his Fall/Winter 2016 collection at New York Fashion Week. One nail art design featured a printed gray and white marble in glossy finish, and the other was a red lace design that picked up the models' bold red lips. 

"I played with volume, texture and soft fibers, using these Jamberry nail art designs to complement the collection. The marble print is mysterious yet visual; subtle but complex; and tipping between the boundaries of femininity and masculinity," says Siriano.

Christian Siriano's Fall/Winter 2016 collection was inspired by artist Sheila Hicks' "Art of the Yarn" exhibit, and the experimentation of yarn design as a form of art.

The nails at 5:31 Jerome featured a dramatic stiletto tip painted in Dermelect Hold Me with a metallic silver crescent done by key manicurist Rose Velez-Miggins. The nails featured underside nail art boasting a fun galaxy of colors using Dermelect Pretentious, Dermelect Swagger, Dermelect Heirloom, Dermelect Fearless, and Dermelect Luminous. Each underside of the nail was painted a different hue to reference the colors of the galaxy.

At the Nicholas K. show, celebrity nail stylist Elle painted the models’ nails in a custom blackened hue, which blended Dermelect’s Swagger and Eccentric together to create a “nightshade” color with hints of eggplant, black, and graphite, dipped in black velvet. The Nicholas K. collection was very textured and structural, and the idea for the nails was to play off the textures. The designer loved the contrast of the high gloss color against the textured, matte velvet.

Wes Gordon’s Fall/Winter 2016 collection was inspired by “downtown romantics and effortless elegance,” and was a celebration of the designer’s favorite things, pieces, techniques and ideas. To pair with the black, white and grey hues, Rita Remark for Essie created a nail look that mimicked broken glass by layering Set in Stones over Hors D'oeuvres.

To get the look, apply Ridge Filling Base Coat to clean, filed nails. Next, apply one coat of Sand Tropez. Then, layer one coat of Set in Stones over one coat of Hors D'oeuvres to create an ultra shiny reflection on the nails. Finish with Gel.Setter Top Coat.

Celebrities rocked the runway to raise awareness for women's heart health at the American Heart Association's Go Red For Women Red Dress Collection at New York Fashion Week. Actresses, singers, athletes and social media stars accessorized their red gowns with Jamberry nail art, which is available to consumers and a portion of proceeds are donated directly to the AHA. Celebrities who wore Jamberry down the runway include: Candace Cameron Bure, Alexa PenaVega, and Gail Simmons.

For the Lulu Frost Fall/Winter 2016 Frequency Collection, designer Lisa Salzer found inspiration in the wonders of outer-space and the expansive power of the human mind. The collection alludes to the wave-like structures found in cosmos and the equipment used in space exploration, giving this look a polished and bold feel. The Sequence group features golden, undulating designs studded with precious and semi-precious stones, the Cosmic series celebrates the fascination with stars using various silhouettes, and the Infinite group mimics stardust scattered across the sky utilizing swirling glass pearls and glinting crystal. -Allegra White

The Creatures of the Wind woman is bookish and intelligent yet unwavering and cool – a tailored tough girl. To emulate this vibe, Morgan Taylor Lacquer lead artist, Danielle Candido, created a two-tone metallic manicure look to coincide with the contrasting textures and tones of the collection. Candido started with chrome base Could Have Foiled Me, a brassy crescent moon was painted along the cuticle line by layering Give Me Gold and Bronzed and Beautiful. No top coat was used in order to give the nails an oxidized look.

When bold colors merge with impeccable tailoring, the clothing begs to be worn with a beauty look that is strong yet subdued. Such is the case at Jay Godfrey's Fall 2016 show, where long almond nails coated in a two-tone neutral design support the sleek chicness of the wares without overpowering. "Jay's collection is based off of an Italian artist who painted earthy vignettes, like plants and woods," says lead manicurist Pattie Yankee. "We wanted a modern twist for the nails, so we went with an inverted chevron. It has a graphic edge like the lines and cuts in Jay's collection." To pull from the Italian painter inspiration, she chose a palette that mimicked the earthy, muted feel of the paintings. The two hues from Yankee's eponymous lacquer line, Earth and Putty in His Hands, couldn't have been a more serendipitous fit. "Earth, earthy! I like it when that happens, when my polish color names coincide with the inspiration!" she laughs. -Karie L. Frost

Celebrity manicurist, Tracylee, created the nail look for the Area NYFW show using Red Carpet Manicure Lacquer in Make Me Blush and Swarovski Crystals. Tracylee wanted to use an “updated neutral” on the nail, which is why she went with a mauve tone – she thinks it’s the next ‘it’ color! Since the designer wanted long, almond-shaped nails, Traceylee spent over 12 hours filing, polishing, and attaching the crystals to artificial nails, which were then applied to each model backstage.

Celebrity manicurist Lisa Logan created the nail look for the Zimmerman show using Red Carpet Manicure Lacquer in Natural Talent. She then used the silver foil found in the Red Carpet Manicure Flash Forward Nail Art Kit and applied it just to the tip (free edge) of the nail for a unique take on the French manicure and to match the eye look! To affix the foil to the tip of the nail, Lisa placed a small amount of nail glue to the tip and then the foil seamlessly transferred to the nail.  (If you’re using gel polish, there is no need to use glue!)

“Masculine meets feminine.” We hear that description time and again in clothing and beauty, but for designer Marissa Webb, it's the backbone of her design aesthetic. She's made a career of realizing the masculine structure of tailoring without the stiffness; instead, a feminine softness allows pieces to swing and float around the body. "She does such a great job of mixing the masculine and the feminine," says Zoya lead manicurist Miss Pop backstage. So, naturally, the nail design needs to support this ebb and flow between the two. "I'm calling this nail art “Out of the Box," Miss Pop says of the black negative space design she has created for the show. She achieves it by first polishing a base coat of Zoya Naked Manicure Perfector in Lavender to brighten the bare square of the design, allowing it to dry, and then laying down a vinyl sticker strip up the middle of the nail. Typically, she says, you'd want your base as dry as humanly possible. "I would say, go watch your fave TV show while your base dries," she says. But the backstage time crunch doesn't allow for such a relaxed pace. Miss Pop then paints Zoya Willa, "a true, black-as-night black," on either side of the vinyl. After waiting five minutes, Miss Pop carefully removes the vinyl, and then paints a straight line of Willa at the base and free edge of the nail. To finish, she caps the design with top coat. Want to wear this design for the warmer months? "It would look great in a white or coral polish," Miss Pop says. -Karie L. Frost

The MILLY presentation was inspired by the concept of duality, featuring minimal and clean shapes in luxuriously bold navy, emerald and gray fabrics. So Lead Manicurist Katie Jane Hughes for Butter London started by applying one coat of Horse Power Nail Rescue Basecoat to clean, dry nails. She then applied two coats of Nail Lacquer in Lust Or Must? for a luxurious and simplistic look. She finished it off with one coat of Hardwear PD Quick Topcoat for a high shine, glossy finish!

The Tadashi Shoji presentation explores the world of body ornamentation – from the intricate detail work of tattooing to the symbolic expression of skin beautification. Lead Manicurist Katie Jane Hughes took that idea and ran with it. Here’s how she created the nails for the show:

1.  On nails, apply Nail Lacquer in Union Jack Black with a fan brush in a sideswipe motion, like windshield wipers, to create a textured look across entire nail.
2. Shape nails into a round, almost pointy-but not dagger-like-nail. 
3. Apply a small amount of glue to the tips of the nail in a random pattern keeping every nail different. 
4. Apply gold foil (that you can get at any craft store) on top of the glue with a manicure stick. 
5. Repeat steps 3 & 4 on all nails. 

And on the toes…  
1. Apply one coat of Nail Foundation Priming Basecoat.

The nails at Taoray Wang were painted by in a cool cashmere taupe color using Dermelect Sophisticate. Key manicurist Rose Velez-Miggins used a striping brush and custom black shade, to create a thin black line starting from the top of the nail to the midpoint. The look was finished with a high gloss top coat using Dermelect High Maintenance. The designer’s collection focused on tailored pieces for the modern woman who wants to be elegant, stylish and sexy, and the modern, minimalist nail art was the perfect complement to the fashion.

For Marc Jacobs’ A/W 2016 collection, manicurist Jin Soon Choi paired the deepest black (Marc Jacobs Blacquer) with the glossiest top coat (Marc Jacobs Shiny) to punctuate the looks coming down the runway.
