Celebrity manicurist Jolene Brodeur shares her experience as a nail technician with over 30 years of experience.
- When and why did you become a nail tech?
“I became a nail tech back in 1990. I have always been in love with nails. I remember playing with my mother’s nail products as a little girl. I would mix colors and use other materials together to produce interesting looks and textures.” - After receiving your nail tech/beauty license, have you received other certifications? If so, what?
“Yes. It took several years until I was able to determine my place in the industry. Once I figured that out, I perused any accreditation necessary in achieving my goals. I became an Educational Ambassador for CND, West Coast Lead Educator for Essie and Specialty Team ‘RED’ for CND, as well as many others.” - Where do you find education, and how do you continue growing your skills and business?
“Finding continued education in a time of COVID has been extremely challenging. I do not care much for online education because I feel it lacks that personal quality that makes learning meaningful to me. I really love the tutorials I find on Facebook and Instagram.” - What obstacles have you faced, and how did you overcome them?
“Most of the difficult obstacles I have encounter in my career have been personal. I suffered with dyslexia most of my life. Finding ways to deal with the disorder presented certain challenges; however, overcoming the self-doubt it produces was a monumental challenge in and of itself.” - What tips do you have for aspiring and budding nail techs?
“I would tell any aspiring artist to trust themselves. As I mentioned earlier, self-doubt is the killer of the creative career. I would also suggest getting a mentor and busting your [butt] to make sure you soak in all their wisdom.”
