Bring your nail art to the forefront by learning how to do chrome nail art with futuristic chrome pigments. Follow these steps from Florida-based nailpro Halley Fortenberry to find out how to incorporate the trendy nail art product into designs inspired by the future of fashion. “I was inspired by the 2016 Met Gala theme “Manus x Machina: Fashion in an Age of Technology, especially the cutout dress trend [seen on the red carpet],” she says.

Futuristic Foil

1. Apply a thin layer of gel base coat and cure. Use a lint-free wipe soaked with alcohol to remove the tacky layer. Apply a thin layer of foil glue to the entire nail, then apply blue and silver foil randomly on the nail.

2. Use a brush to apply thin swaths of white gel paint, allowing the silver and blue foil to peek through. Cure. Apply a thin layer of no-wipe gel top coat and cure.

3. Use a sponge applicator to rub chrome pigment randomly on the nail. Dust off any loose pigment with a fluffy brush. Next, apply hard gel to the cuticle area. Place rhinestones in the hard gel and cure. To finish, apply a layer of gel top coat, and cure.

Tapered Chrome Tips

1. Apply a thin layer of gel base coat and cure. Apply two coats of light blue glitter gel polish, curing after each. Then, apply a no-wipe top coat and cure. Mix together equal parts silver chrome pigment and blue holographic chrome pigment. Use a sponge applicator to apply the mixture to the nail. Dust off excess pigment, then apply a layer of gel top coat, and cure.

2. Use a striping brush to paint two curved lines below the center of the nail with white gel polish. Then, paint a small “U” shape at the cuticle. Paint a second “U” shape outside the first, then draw a line connecting the two “U” shapes at the cuticle. Cure.

3. Outline a small triangle at the center of the nail with white gel polish to connect the two sets of curved lines. Then, outline the design with white gel polish on each side, and cure.

4. Paint a triangular spiral along both sides of the nail with white gel polish. Cure. Then, paint three tapered lines at the tip and small dots in between the lines, and cure. Apply hard gel to the cuticle area, the center of the nail and just above the nail art at the tip. Place rhinestones in the hard gel and cure. To finish, apply a thin layer of gel top coat, and cure.

Silver Lining

1. Apply a thin layer of gel base coat and cure. Apply two coats of black gel polish, curing after each. Apply a thin layer of no-wipe top coat and cure. Next, use a sponge applicator to apply chrome pigment to the nail. Dust off excess pigment, apply a thin layer of gel top coat and cure.

2. Use a detail brush to paint a almond shape at the center of the nail with white gel polish. Cure. Next, apply foil glue to the center of the almond shape, then place a piece of blue foil onto the glue.

3. Outline the almond shape with white gel polish. Paint an upside-down heart at the cuticle and outline the heart shape with white gel polish. Cure. Next, paint a geometric spiral from the cuticle to the center point of the nail. Cure. Then, paint two curved lines from the center to the tip, and cure.

4. Paint two geometric spiral designs at the tip of the nail using white gel polish. Then, paint two “V” shapes at the tip and small dots. Next, apply hard gel to the upside-down heart, place three small rhinestones into the hard gel, and cure. To finish, apply a layer of gel top coat, and cure.
