These cobalt blue and two-tone gold nails by John Nguyen look intricate and complex—which they are!—but the technique used is something that can easily be adopted into your own designs for your clients’ holiday manicures. The trick? Layering. Nguyen used a deep shimmering blue as the base color, then topped it with glitter in a similar hue to add dimension.

Go behind the scenes of NAILPRO Magazine as John Nguyen (he’s the artist responsible for lots of those jaw-dropping 3-D CND nails at New York Fashion Week) talks about his inspiration for the December 2015 cover and shares step-by-step how he created the nail look. These cobalt blue and two-tone gold nails look intricate and complex—which they are!—but the technique used is something that can easily be adopted into your own designs for your clients’ holiday manicures. The trick? Layering. Nguyen used a deep shimmering blue as the base color, then topped it with glitter in a similar hue to add dimension. Similarly, for the gold embellishments, he used a metallic gold to create the design and then topped it with gold transfer foil in two different yellow and rose tones.
