The Backstory
I first started in the nail industry in 2004 after my mum, who was working as a spa manager at the time, suggested I did a nail course, as I’ve always been into art and drawing. I remember when I was younger, I always used to paint my nails metallic silver and glitter. I tried a few different nail courses after this and brought a second hand nail kit, so I could practice more at home. My friends and family were so supportive and used to sit with me for hours.

I kept on with my training and practicing and soon picked up more clients.
I took the plunge and handed my notice in and became self-employed. For a year, I rented a little nail desk in a beauty salon, and then a new opportunity arose to have my own little shop. My family were so supportive and said it’s a great opportunity, so I thought, "why not?" It was certainly scary to sign a contract, but I needed to do this and push myself for my nail career.
My mum worked with me, and I spent hours sitting and painting nail designs in the shop while building up my little business. I soon realized I needed more people to work with me too and offered my desks to rent.
After 11 years and always keeping my skills up to date with different brands, such as Gelish, NSI and the GelBottle, another opportunity came along for a bigger salon. This was a huge step, but would allow more techs to start their own career. It’s been amazing to watch other nail techs who work alongside me grow in their career and see their lives develop in the nail industry.
The Look
For me, it has always been functionality, cleanliness and welcoming. I love bright airy spaces and little to no clutter where possible.

I trained as a florist when I first left school and worked in floristry for six years. With this experience, I have been able to add seasonal changes to the salon in the form of wreaths, garlands and pampas clouds over the years.
Signature Services
I only offer gel nail services and will happily work on short or long nails. I aim to always offer that perfect long lasting manicure and minimal nail art. My favorite is an almond nail manicure, finished in a classic red. They always look so beautiful and eye catching.
The Goods
I have a few favorite brands; Lecenté, The GelBottle and Personaility. I love to retail cuticle oil and hand creams, so my clients keep their manicure in check. Hydra Drops by Personaility are taking off, as they are non-greasy and hydrating.
Social Butterfly
I’m super active on social media and love the networking side of it. I always try to post current trends, shades, helpful hints and tips and nail art reels. You can catch me on Instagram, Facebook, Threads and TikTok.
What's Next?
I’ve recently completed my AET level 3 with Habia in 2023. Teaching is something I’ve always wanted to do, and with the support of family and friends, I have achieved this little dream of mine. This year, I have started to teach students e-file training and micro-manicure. My goal is to train and help more students become the best nail tech they can be for 2025!
Up Close With Natalie Kirk
What was your first job in the nail industry? Natalie Kirk headshotCourtesy of Natalie Kirk
Mobile service on a self-employed basis.
What inspires you?
Art, fashion, nature and thinking outside the box. My mind is always racing for new trends.
What was the most challenging thing that happened while opening your salon?
Since opening my salon, the most challenging thing has been the aftermath of COVID and how much it has changed and impacted the high street salon. It’s keeping the momentum going in an ever-changing industry.
What advice would you give a new salon owner?
Believe in yourself! There are super hard days, weeks and years, but they do come to pass. Invest in the best products first and not later. Set your standards and expectations high, and maintain consistency.
“I can’t discuss my salon without mentioning…”
My amazing clientele!! If it wasn’t for them, I wouldn’t be able to keep creating and doing the job I absolutely love and adore. They give me the strength and courage to do what I do best.
