Yesterday, I got a call to go to the home of a new client, an actress (who’s 1/2 of a major Hollywood power couple) in a few short hours. Her assistant said that she got my info from another celeb client of mine and that the actress wanted soft gel extensions and a pedicure.
When I arrived, she asked for a “super quick service,” but her nails were in terrible shape. There was lacquer over gel that was over another layer of gel over soft gel tips, plus lifting. Also, she has the deepest rings of fire I’ve seen in a very long time.

I knew that if I was going to do them right, it would not be a quick service. I had to make a choice because luck is when preparation meets opportunity. There were so many product options in my arsenal for extensions, so I packed for all of them: BIAB, acrygel and more, but I had mere seconds to decide. Let’s back up for a bit because it’s a long and well-planned process.
Want to work with celebrities? Here’s are the 10 things that I believe you must have.
1. A book with test shoots
Test shoots are how you build a body of work and show clients (VIPs directly and/or their publicists, managers and assistants) not only your actual work but that you have experience outside of a salon and on a photo shoot set.
2. Assisting experience
Assisting other artists is key to learning the proper etiquette, set-up and more. It will give you valuable insight into what happens on set and how to act while you’re there, on your own.
3. A website
You need a site that is separate from your salon’s website, and the domain should be something clear, easy to remember and professional like yourname.com. It should have at least 10 photos of the work you’ve done on set (not in-salon work).
4. A professional Instagram
You need a professional IG with a call-to-action (link to your phone number and/or email address) where you can be reached quickly, plus photos and videos of your work from your test shoots.
5. Five-star services
Only offer your A-level services. Being in an unfamiliar location with a new client will put extra pressure on even the most experienced artist. Only offering services that you are the most confident in will ease that pressure immensely.
6. Rates & policies
What if you get a request and they want to know your rate? Or what if they cancel? Having your rates and policies in place in advance will allow you to respond much sooner - and timeliness is everything. Don’t give them a reason to look elsewhere!
7. A ready, stocked kit
Your kit must be stocked and ready to roll. Last night, I had six hours to prepare. Countless times, I have gotten calls to come “right now.” The world of celebrity and VIP talent moves very quickly. You may not have time to go to the supply store, and your kit should already be packed and ready to roll out the door at a moment’s notice.
8. Referrals
In this world, trust is everything. When someone influential vouches for your skills, it instantly elevates your credibility. Nurture your connections, give outstanding services, be respectful, be on time and let your reputation speak for itself.
9. Versatility
Pssst, this is your secret weapon. It's not just about doing nails; it's about being a master of multiple techniques, like lacquer, structured manicures, press-ons, acrylic and acrygel. By knowing and having the products for multiple services, you’ll be able to handle any situation thrown your way with confidence and grace.
10. Flexibility
Unpredictable schedules and diverse personalities is the norm. Whether they're jet-lagged, stressed or full of energy, it's our job to adapt and ensure a seamless service. This means being flexible, accommodating last-minute changes to appointments and handling any curveballs with grace and professionalism. By staying cool under pressure and adjusting to the needs of your clients, you'll earn their trust and loyalty in no time.
