Positive Meals
Cheryl and Jim Markham, cofounders of PureOlogy Serious Colour Care and recipients of the 2009 Spirit of Life Award, gathered beauty industry friends and colleagues in October for an afternoon barbecue and fundraiser in support of the Professional Beauty Association's Dining for Change. Dining for Change is an event where beauty professionals across the nation throw dinner parties on the same evening to help raise money for three beauty industry charities: the Salons Against Domestic Abuse Fund/Cut It Out; NCA Disaster Relief Fund; and Look Good Feel Better. At the barbecue, the Markham's and their guests raised close to $2,000 for the beauty industry philanthropies. "Through Dining for Change, our goal was to bring our friends together to support these very important beauty industry causes and improve the lives of individuals impacted with breast cancer, domestic abuse and natural disasters," says Cheryl Markham. Personal Feedback
MaeLing Parrish, global educator for American International Industries, traveled to Lithuania and Hungary to provide two-day seminars on the SuperNail Systems product line in October. At the seminars, Parrish gave numerous demos on how to create pink-and-white enhancements and nail art. The attendees also received hands-on training and personalized feedback from Parrish. "MaeLing took care of every nail technician who attended the training, as she explained their mistakes and informed them how to avoid them," says Ruta Bublienes, owner of Nagavita and exclusive distributor of SuperNail Systems in Lithuania.

Gray Days
Celebrity manicurist Jenna Hipp gave actress Megan Fox a pristine manicure using Orly International's muted gray Mirror Mirror lacquer for the October cover of Cosmopolitan. Typically, Cosmo sticks to sheer peaches and neutral polishes for cover shoots, but Hipp convinced the beauty editors to break their color rules with this stunning concrete gray lacquer, which she explained is "a little bit naughty and a little bit nice-fitting for Megan!" This season, gray lacquers are an ideal choice for a neutral shade with a kick!
High-Tech Polish
Polish behemoth OPI Products announced an exclusive partnership with Dell to bring nail lacquer shades to laptops. The computer company will offer a collection of laptops-the Dell Mini, Inspiron and Studio models—with the option to be customized with one of your favorite OPI lacquer shades.
"Beautiful nails really are the ultimate accessory to any look," says Suzi Weiss-Fischmann, OPI executive vice president and artistic director. "And now, with Dell laptops that coordinate with OPI nail lacquers, you can match your nails to your emails!"
With the initial launch in October, the companies released six holiday lacquer colors—including glittering red Dear Santa, sparkly pink Princesses Rule! and shimmering white Kyoto Pearl—and they plan to release 20 more classic OPI colors to the market. Consumers can easily personalize their new laptops with OPI lacquer shades at the Dell Design Studio at dell.com.

The Must-Have Accessory: Nail Art
Nail art has hit the fashion elite as Vogue, the iconic go-to fashion magazine, featured an extremely positive piece on nail art, proclaiming "museum-worthy manicures" as the perfect accessory in its October issue. In the piece, "No-Fear Nails," writer Sally Singer delves into her nail art awakening—and newfound addiction—after she visits Valley nail salon in lower Manhattan, where she encounters beautiful and intricate nail art. To highlight this must-have accessory, there is a stunning image of a limited edition zipper design by Minx, followed by a six-page fashion spread that features high-end designer duds—such as Diane Von Furstenberg, Dries Van Noten and Marc Jacobs—with perfectly paired custom Minx, which were applied by New York-based celebrity manicurist Lisa Logan.
Logan received the opportunity to work on this eye-catching, nail-centric spread after working on another photo shoot for Vogue. While on set, one of the editors told Logan about her ideas for an upcoming shoot. "She showed me a dress that she was going to feature and I told her that I had nails that matched it perfectly," says Logan. "I walked her over to my book of Minx designs and pulled out a set of Minx with cheetah spots that matched beautifully with the Dolce & Gabbana dress." Needless to say, the editor loved it—as did Vogue's editor in chief Anna Wintour—and from there, the concept of matching nails spiraled into formation with Minx creating customized nails for 30 different outfits for Logan to use.
With the multitude of nail designs Logan had on hand for each outfit, she worked closely with the stylist to help her perfectly accessorize each look. "During the shoot, there was more attention given to nails than usual," explains Logan. "For a long time, nail technicians often took the backseat in fashion, but we are becoming as relevant and as essential to fashion as shoes, clothes and bags."

Honorable Efforts
In honor of Recovery Month, Be! Products sponsored the Champions for Recovery event with A Safe Haven, an organization dedicated to helping people recover from alcohol and drug abuse. The event was held in Washington, D.C. in September to honor Rhode Island Representative Patrick J. Kennedy with a Champion for Recovery award for his dedication to recovery and the passage of the Paul Wellstone Mental Health and Addiction Equity Act in 2008. The Wellstone Act went into effect in October and requires insurance companies to recognize mental illness—including substance abuse and alcoholism—in the same way as physical illness. Be! Products strongly supports drug and alcohol recovery efforts, says Neli Vazquez-Rowland, CEO of Be! Products. To this end, the beauty company partners with A Safe Haven to employ people who have earned a second chance through the program.
