Survey Says...

Survey Says...

Luxury nail color and care brand Essie Cosmetics recently conducted a consumer nail survey to get to the bottom of consumer nail habits in the current economy. Over 6,000 women participated in the Essie nail survey and the results proved positive for the nail industry as a whole. The results show that women view manicures as an integral part of their beauty routine—80% of the participants said the economy has not affected how often they receive a professional manicure, and 63% of the women polled said they change their nail polish once a week. In terms of chipped polish, 80% of the women said they immediately take care of their nails if there is a chip, and 50% rank taking care of their nails second as the most important part of their overall beauty routine.
"The Essie Nail Survey deepens our understanding of women's thoughts, wants and needs as it relates to their nail habits and helps us continue to offer the best nail colors, treatments and spa products in the market," says Essie Weingarten, founder and president of Essie Cosmetics.

Farouk Shami

When Farouk Shami, founder and chairman of Farouk Systems, heard about the tragic shootings at the Fort Hood, Texas, military base in November that left 13 U.S. soldiers dead and approximately 30 wounded, he immediately sprung into action to help those affected by the tragedy. Farouk and his staff quickly went to work to prepare care packages for the soldiers and families affected by the horrific attack. "We are a company of action, and we are doing everything in our power to ensure that our neighbors in Fort Hood are taken care of as they endure the aftermath of this heartbreaking attack," says Shami. The Houston-based company worked closely with the Fort Hood American Red Cross and local hospitals to ensure that their packages were sent to those in need. Farouk Systems distributed donations estimated at more than one million dollars to the military community and surrounding hospitals affected by the Fort Hood incident.

Poems About Polish

During an episode of the The Ellen DeGeneres Show in October, OPI Products took the stage as the famed comic and talk show host devoted her opening monologue to humorously chatting about her recent manicure experience, where she was astounded by the vast array of OPI polish colors and their imaginative names. DeGeneres recalled a time when there were only three or four polish colors available and jokingly likened today's salon manicure and polish choices to a trip to a paint store. She then playfully explored the clever names of the OPI lacquers she saw at the salon, pulling out the colors I Only Drink Champagne, I'm Not Really a Waitress and My Chihuahua Bites. DeGeneres ended the monologue on an especially comic note, as she read a poem she wrote inspired by the names of OPI nail lacquers. In the poem, she entertained the audience with lines such as "My toes are Clubbing til Sunrise," "The moon is All Lacquered Up" and "The stars are Tickle My France-y."

Third Quarter Results

The Professional Beauty Association (PBA) announced in October that the third quarter Salon/Spa Performance Index (SSPI) results show that the outlook for the salon and spa industry remained positive as it rose for the second consecutive quarter. The SSPI—a quarterly composite index that tracks the health of and outlook for the U.S. salon and spa industry—stood at 101.9 in the third quarter, up 0.1% from the second quarter.

"For the first time this year, salon and spa owners reported a net increase in service sales," says Sam Leyvas, director of government affairs for PBA. "Long term, we are seeing growing optimism on the part of salon and spa owners both in terms of service and retail sales in the months ahead."

The SSPI is measured in relation to a steady-state level of 100 and based on the responses to PBA's Salon/Spa Industry Tracking Survey, which is fielded quarterly among 800 salon and spa owners nationwide on a variety of indicators, including service and retail sales, customer traffic and capital expenditures.
