Nail Artist Q&A: “Nailed Down!” with Michelle Sandy

Michelle Sandy Composit

Welcome to NAILPRO’s NAILED DOWN where we “nail down” the details of selected nail design artists from our User Galleries.

This week we visit Lancaster, CA.

Meet Michelle Sandy:

Michelle is a student at Lancaster Beauty School and a proud student of Kyoko Fisher, who encouraged Michelle to submit to NAILPRO.

How would you describe yourself?
I am fun, outgoing, creative and caring!

Tell us about how you got started in the nail industry.
This is a long story. I am a massage therapist and I read people and their bodies, kinda like spiritual counseling. I realized if I could paint on canvas, I could paint nails and give my clients something to look at and feel better. I could do butterflies for transformation, flowers to reflect on youth, pink for compassion, etc. I am using beauty as a spiritual healing aid.

What/Who inspires your work?
I have always loved Vincent Van Gogh. He uses individual brush strokes to create an emotion.

Are there any tool(s) you can’t live without?
Tiny line brushes, my angle brush and a tooth pick.

Do you have a favorite technique or style?
Hand marbling.

What is your craziest/funniest nail story?
I had an Asian lady come in by referral and she loved her Chihuahua, so we put cute Chihuahuas on her toes! (see picture at the bottom)

What tip can you offer to other nail technicians?
Let go of what you think you can do long enough to recklessly try.

Anything else you’d like to add?
I do commissioned paintings as well. Some of my art has been in gallery showings in the Cedar Art Gallery also in Lancaster. [email protected]
