Sun and Sand

Warmer weather calls for tropical nail designs.

Have you planted your perennials and annuals? If so, your yards and window boxes will be bursting with vibrant colors this time of year, so why not bring some of that new growth into your salon? Nail art that features flowers goes with every outfit or swimsuit, and Ellen M. Del Valle from Ponce, Puerto Rico, shares her talent with Nailpro to inspire everyone’s green thumb. She offers three floral-themed ideas that utilize a double-load painting technique described in Brush Up, below. One of her designs also features a charming bird that fits in perfectly with her flowery motif. Another blooming idea comes to us from Nodoka Wakabayashi from Sammamish, Washington. She demonstrates how to use 3-D techniques to add the flair of a fresh-cut flower to clients’ nails. You can almost smell the fragrance emanating from this bouquet of designs, and your clients will love helping you pick colors that complement their own plantings.

Brush Up
Double-load painting originated with tole painters, who developed elaborate painted designs on metal surfaces, and you can use this time-tested technique for your nail art. Add paint to one corner of a flat brush, and add another paint color to the opposite corner. Swipe the brush on a plastic bag to blend the colors, and you’re ready to go! Use this simple blending technique to create flower petals, clouds, waves, leaves or anything else your imagination allows.

Pretty Bird
1 Double-load a flat brush with yellow and white paints. Create the bird’s head and body by turning the brush counterclockwise on the nail. Then double-load the same flat brush with white and blue, and paint the wing and tail.
2 Double-load the flat brush with pink and violet to paint the flower petals. Using green and yellow paints, add leaves to the petals.
3 With a fine-point brush, paint a brown branch on the nail.
4 Using white paint, add accents to the wings and flowers. Using black paint, add details to the eye, beak, feet and flower. Finish with top coat.

Just Rosy
1 Double-load a flat brush with pink and fuchsia paints, and use it to create the outer petals of a rose. Repeat this process to make the inner layers of petals. Add a rosebud to the center of the bloom.
2 Double-load the brush with green and yellow paints. Move the brush in a zigzag motion while turning it clockwise and counterclockwise to form the leaves. With a fine-tip brush, add green veins and curlicues.
3 Paint daisy petals with white paint; add white details to the edges of the rose petals.
4 Add a yellow dot in the daisy’s center. Finish with top coat.

2 Double-load the brush with green and yellow paints, and add leaves.
3 Using a fine-point brush, paint white daisies and accent lines.
4 Add green accents to the stem and leaves, and add pink accents to the flower. Dot the centers of the daisies with yellow paint. Finish with top coat.

Pink Petals

Fresh-Cut 3-D
1 Coat the nail with clear glitter polish. Allow the polish to dry.
2 Sculpt petals out of purple acrylic, bending each petal into shape before it completely sets.
3 Using green acrylic, sculpt a leaf.
4 Add tiny accent lines to each acrylic piece. Adhere the acrylic pieces to the polished nail with glue or green acrylic.
5 Add store-bought floral stamens or apply tiny yellow acrylic balls to the center of the flower. Finish with a glittery top coat.
