Judging Criteria and Style Examples for The Glossies Competition

Our new photo nail competition, The Glossies, will be judged just like a traditional Nailpro Competition. The only difference? The Glossies is absolutely free to enter and requires no travelling – we just want to welcome new people into the world of competing! To help you get acquainted with the styles and judging that Nailpro Competitions use, we’ve created this helpful guide.

The standard of perfection for the Salon Success competition; a set of nail enhancements that have:
•    A more durable, wearable look
•    A shape that ranges from extreme square to extreme oval (stiletto)
•    A 2 to 1 ratio of nail bed (pink) to free edge (white), measured from the center of the smile line
•    Product thinly applied near the cuticle area, reinforced at the stress area, and tapered through the free edge to a thinness suitable for salon-style nail enhancements (.03-.05)
•    Consistent “C” curves between 33.33% and 40% (120° and 144° arc).
•    When you photograph your set of nails for The Glossies, make sure to take pictures from all five angles as illustrated

Each set of nails will be looked at in detail by 3 judges. Here is what they are looking for:

Judge 1
Smile Lines – 10 Points
• the smile lines are crisp (definition between pink and white)
• the smile lines are symmetrical and consistent (even points and equal curvature)

“C” curves – 10 Points
• the curvature of the nail enhancements is symmetrical and consistent
• the depth of curvature is a range between 33.33 and 40%
• the percent of curvature enhances the models nails
• if nail enhancements are oval in shape, consideration will be given for the apparent lack of curvature at the distal edge

Cuticle Area – 10 Points
• the product is flush to the natural nails and close to the cuticles
• the model’s skin at the cuticle area is in excellent condition (free from abrasions)

Shape – 10 Points
• the shape is symmetrical and consistent individually
• the shape is symmetrical and consistent together

Judge 2
Product Control – 10 Points
• the product is completely free of air bubbles and pits
• the color of the product is consistent
• the skin is free from all enhancement products

Surface Structure – 10 Points
• the top surfaces of the nail enhancements are smooth and perfectly contoured
• the bottom surfaces of the nail enhancements are smooth and perfectly contoured

Presentation – 5 Points
• this entry was presented neat and clean
• the underside of both hands are free from all product debris
• the nails are thoroughly clean (absent of dust)

Lateral Structure – 10 Points
• the nail enhancements align perfectly with the sides of the natural nails
• if nail enhancements are oval in shape, the point at which the oval begins is consistent
• the arch of the nail enhancements is consistently located

Judge 3
Length – 10 Points
• the length, measured from cuticle to the end of the extension, is consistent between matching nails (pinkie to pinkie, etc.) and in proportion to each other
• the length is suitable for salon style nail enhancements – a suggested range 2 to 1 ratio of nail bed to free edge is ideal – provided the length looks balanced on models hands

Polish or Color Application – 5 Points – One Hand
• the polish completely covers the nails (close to the cuticle and covers all edges)
• the application is smooth, even and clean

Finish Work – 5 Points (One Hand)
• the entire surface of the nail enhancement is smooth and very shiny (absent of scratches)
• the edges of the nails are smooth and finished
• the nails are thoroughly clean (absent of dust)

Overall Impression – 5 Points
• the nails complement the model’s hands
•  the thinness is suitable for salon-style nail enhancements

Be creative and interpret the theme however you see it!

 

Each set of nails will be looked at in detail by 3 judges. Here is what they are looking for:

Originality – 5 Points
• the design is innovative (new and original)
• the design is unique (different from other designs)

Visual Interest – 10 Points
• the design captures your attention
• the design holds your attention

Color – 10 Points
• the colors enhance the design
• the colors complement each other

Presentation – 5 Points
• this entry is presented within the Hand Painted Nail Art Rule Guidelines
• this entry is presented as if it is a special piece of art
• care was taken to make this presentation neat and clean

Judge 2
Balance – 5 Points
• various elements of the design are well-balanced, neither too sparse or too busy
• the sum of the design is in harmony with the parts of the whole design

Design – 10 Points
• the design enhances the theme
• the design is well thought out
• the design is complete and needs no improvement

Detail – 10 Points
• the detail is clean and precise
• the clarifies the design, adding dimension
• the design has adequate detail

Overall Impression – 10 Points
• the design makes an excellent overall impression
• the design is complete and needs no improvement

Judge 3
Complexity – 10 Points
• the design is challenging, demanding skill and effort
• the design involves multiple techniques

Workmanship – 10 Points
• the overall quality of the work demonstrates outstanding artistic skills
• the workmanship is neat, clean and precise

Tip Length – 5 Points
• the tips are graduated in length or size
• the tip length is no longer than 2″
• the tip width is no wider than 3/4 of an inch if flattened out

Theme – 10 Points
• the theme is obvious and completely developed
• the theme is continued on all 10 nails

Before and After is a competition where one hand (left) has nails that are completely untouched and void of product (to show a before hand). The right hand will be the after. This hand can be manicured (natural nails) or have enhancements added. The idea is to show what a transformation a good manicure can make. Competitors will present photos of their models’ nails, both before and then after the amazing transformation. The natural nails on the left (before) hand must be completely un-touched. The right (after) hand will be transformed into a work of beauty to show the possibility of what manicured nails look like. Note: NO products whatsoever shall be present or used on the left (before) hand. The right (after) hand can be manicured natural nails or the nails may have added enhancements and/or embellishments. It’s your choice. The nail enhancements on two nails of the right (after) hand must be polished with red color.

 

Deadline: September 20th, 2014

Before and After Competition Rules:

1. Competitors will present photos of their model’s nails, both before and then after the amazing transformation.  

2. The natural nails on the left (before) hand must be completely un-touched.  

3. No products whatsoever shall be present or used on the left (before) hand.

4. The right (after) hand will be transformed into a work of beauty to show the possibility of what manicured nails look like.

5. The right (after) hand can be manicured natural nails or the nails may have added enhancements and or embellishments.  It’s your choice.

6. The nail enhancements on 2 nails of the right (after) must be polished with red color.

7.  Before and After will be judged in the following categories: level of difficulty, level of transformation, cuticle area, shape, product control, surface structure, presentation, lateral structure, length, polish or color application, finish work, and overall impression.

 

Each set of nails will be looked at in detail by 3 judges. Here is what they are looking for:

Judge 1
Level of Difficulty – 10 Points – Before hand
    • the transformation required technical skill
    • the before hand reflects the difficulty of this transformation

Transformation – 10 Points – Finished hand
    • the finished hand reflects adequate transformation
    • the transformation is finished completely and needs no improvement
    
Length – 10 Points – Finished hand

    • the length, measured from cuticle to the end of the extension, is consistent between matching nails (pinkie to pinkie, etc.) and in proportion to each other
    • the length looks balanced on models hands

Shape – 10 Points– Finished hand
    • the shape is symmetrical and consistent individually
    • the shape is symmetrical and consistent together as a set

Judge 2
Product Control – 10 Points– Finished hand
    • the product is completely free of air bubbles and pits
    • the color of the product is consistent
    • the skin is free from all enhancement products

Surface Structure – 10 Points– Finished hand
    • the top surfaces of the nail enhancements are smooth and perfectly contoured
    • the bottom surfaces of the nail enhancements are smooth and perfectly contoured

Previous Condition – 10 Points – Before hand
    •the before hand require filing (uneven lengths, rough top surface, etc.)
    •the cuticles on the before hand require conditioning (overgrowth, ragged cuticle, etc.)

Lateral Structure – 10 Points– Finished hand
    • the nail enhancements align perfectly with the sides of the natural nails
    • if nail enhancements are oval in shape, the point at which the oval begins is consistent
    • the arch of the nail enhancements is consistently located

Judge 3
Cuticle and Skin condition – 10 Points – Before hand
    • the cuticles are intact and the cuticle work looks finished
    • the model’s skin at the cuticle area is in excellent condition (free from abrasions)
• the skin of the hands looks healthy and well-conditioned

Polish or Color Application – 5 Points – Finished hand
•    the polish or color completely covers the nails (close to the cuticle and covers all edges)
•    the application is smooth, even and clean

Finish Work – 5 Points – Finished Hand
•    the entire surface of the nail or enhancement is smooth and very shiny (absent of scratches)
•    the edges of the nails are smooth and finished
•    the nails are thoroughly clean (absent of dust)

Overall Impression– 5 Points – Finished Hand
•    the nails complement the model’s hands
•    the nails and hands appear healthy and well-groomed enhancements

It’s All About the Bling! encourages you to try out dazzling 3-D embellishments. Complete two hands with gorgeous bling type embellishments. All types of nail embellishments are allowed. There is no preferred length. No maximum amount of bling is too much. Top coat, UV gel sealant may be used. Note: Art or embellishments of any kind are NOT allowed to be embedded in the base nail extension. Any and all types of copyrighted art, designs, or logos are NOT allowed.

THEME: COUNTY FAIR

Mixed Media involves mixing both hand painting and 3-D nails.

Competitors must use all of the following mediums for this competition: 3-D nail art, hand-painted nail art and embellishments. Failure to use these will result in a 10-point deduction for each medium not used.

1.    All entries must entry must consist of a set of 10 individual manufacturer tips. They may not be constructed by a lay person. They must be from a manufacturer box. The length must be no longer than 2” in length and no wider than 3/4” if they were flattened out. Tips must be graduated in size. Finished tips must be wearable. Tips must remain individual and not be secured to one another. Design may encompass all 10 tips as a picture, but tips must remain individual. If tips do not meet the requirements, the design may be disqualified or receive a point deduction.

2.    Mixed Media Nail Art will be judged in the following categories: originality, visual interest, color, presentation, balance, design & detail, tip length, overall impression, complexity, dimension, workmanship and theme.

These Rules Apply to All Categories

1.     All of the rules specified for each individual competition category (3-D Nail Art, Hand Painted Nail Art and Embellishments) must be followed.

2.     Competitors may NOT use any copyrighted art, designs or logos.

3.    Tip original color does NOT matter.

4.    Top coat, UV gel sealant or glitter polish may be used.

5.     NO tools or molds may be used to assist with any design. Electric files may NOT be used in any capacity to assist with design.

6.    Competitors may use a similar version of copyrighted art, design or logo but they must not be identical to the original. If artwork does not follow criteria judges will determine point deductions.

7.    Entry will be judged on presentation.

8.    Any 3-D Nail Art, Hand Painted Nail Art or Embellishment design that has already won first place at any NAILPRO competition cannot be reused by the winner or copied by other competitors in subsequent NAILPRO competitions. The NAILPRO competition staff will disqualify any design it considers too similar to a winning design. Any discussion with the NAILPRO competition staff about designs will be held in strict confidence.

These Rules Apply to 3-D Nail Art (3-D) Only

1.    All 3-D nail art must be made from professional nail products (colored liquid-and-powder acrylic, light-cured gel, wraps and resin, polish, rhinestones, etc.)

2.    The 3-D design may not protrude more than 1” in height from the tip surface.

These Rules Apply to Hand Painted Nail Art (HPNA) Only

1.    All work must be done by hand painting only. Only paint and nail polish may be used. No Gel polish.

These Rules Apply to Embellishments (EMB) Only

1.    Embellishments or adornments may be used, but must NOT exceed 25% of the overall design.

Inspired Artistic Genius
This competition’s theme: CHAMPIONS! Create art based on how the word makes you feel or what the word “champions” means to you.

You must also use 5 top-secret materials to qualify:

  • Crystal rock candy
  • Purple thread – it must be visible
  • Silver sequins
  • Purple glitter
  • White candy sprinkles
     

An Inspired Artistic Genius competition must consist of one hand (5 nails) of Genius Inspired Artistic nails. The base nails may be natural nails or extensions.
 
INFORMATION
This competition is about being inspired. It will consist of three parts. Part 1 Inspiration, Part 2 Artistic components and Part 3 Genius.

Part 1: Inspiration – Your design must be inspired by “Champions.”

Part 2: Artistic Components – We are going to provide you with a list of 5 items for you to incorporate into the design. They may be incorporated any way you feel.

You will be required to write in a few words about how you were inspired.

Design Sculpture

THEME: AVANT GARDE

A competition in which a set of competition-style nail enhancements is applied using forms, and whose design incorporates colors used in artistic ways.

1. Competitors will complete a set of competition-style nail enhancements using forms and colored acrylic products in original and artistic ways. Tips and adhesive are NOT allowed.

2. Competitors may only use acrylic liquid-and-powder products. Pre-existing color or color additives are allowed.

3. No paint or nail polish of any sort may be used at all. Hand painting is not allowed.

4. Glitter powder may be used but must not be included in more than 10% of the design.

5. Embellishments of any type are NOT to be used.

6. The theme for this competition is Avant Garde. The theme must be followed on all 10 nails.

7. The surface of the nail enhancements must be flush—NO raised surfaces. “C” curves range between 40% and 50%. Length must be a 1 to 1 ratio. The thinness of a salon style nail, approximately .03 to .05 inches, is ideal. Credit card thickness for example.

8. Competitors may NOT use any copyrighted art, designs or logos.

9. NO molds or tools may be used to assist with design, i.e., impression tools. Electric files may NOT be used in any capacity to assist with design.

10. The nail enhancements on both hands must be finished to a high shine by buffing, applying top coat or using a UV gel sealant. No other polish, including glitter polish, is allowed.

11. Design Sculptured Nails will be judged in the following categories: lateral structure and “C” curves, cuticle area, design and theme, surface structure, product control and finish work, complexity, length and shape, color and balance, originality and overall impression.
 
12. Any Design Sculptured Nail design that wins, or has already won, first place at a NAILPRO competition cannot be reused by the winner or copied by other competitors in subsequent NAILPRO competitions. 3-D Nail Design

THEME: CAMPING TRIP

A competition in which a NAILPRO-designated thematic, wearable multi-dimensional nail art design has been applied to a set of 10 tips using nail products.

 

1. A 3-D Nail Art entry must consist of a set of 10 individual manufacturer tips. They may not be constructed by a layperson. They must be from a manufacturer box. The length of the tip must be no longer than 2” in length and no wider than 3/4” if they were to be flattened out. Tips must be graduated in size. The design must be wearable. The design may not protrude more than 1” in height from the tip surface. Tips must remain individual and not be secured to one another. Design must be on all 10 tips. 2. Original tip color does not matter.
 
3. All nail art must be made from professional nail products (colored liquid-and-powder acrylic, light-cured gel, wraps and resin, polish, rhinestones, etc.)

4. Embellishments or adornments may be used, but must NOT exceed 25% of the overall design.

5. Top coat, UV gel sealant or glitter polish may be used.

6. Competitors may NOT use any copyrighted art, designs or logos.

7. Competitors must prepare and submit a written statement in two parts. One detailing the products and processes used to create the art, and the other telling the story of your interpretation of the theme. Do NOT name specific brands or manufacturers, and Failure to provide this information will result in a 5-point deduction in overall score.

8. Display/Presentation: Ten tips must be securely fastened to a plain (one color, no texture, no mirror), flat surface for the judging process. The size of the mounting surface is to be a maximum of 6 inches wide by 8 inches deep by ¼ tall and it must be FLAT, FLUSH AND STURDY.

9. Display will be judged on presentation.

10. 3-D Nail Art will be judged in the following categories: originality, visual interest, color, presentation, balance, design, dimension, overall impression, complexity, workmanship, tip length and theme.

11. Any 3-D Nail Art design that wins, or has already won, first place at a NAILPRO competition cannot be reused by the winner or copied by other competitors in subsequent NAILPRO competitions. The NAILPRO competition staff reserves the right to disqualify any design it considers too similar to a winning design. Any discussion with the NAILPRO competition staff about designs will be held in strict confidence.

 

 

Each set of nails will be looked at in detail by 3 judges. Here is what they are looking for:

Judge 1
Originality – 5 Points
    • the design is innovative (new and original)
    • the design is unique (different from other designs)

Visual Interest – 10 Points
    • the design captures your attention
    • the design holds your attention

Color – 10 Points    
    • the colors enhance the design
    • the colors complement each other

Presentation – 5 Points
    • this entry is presented within the 3-D rules
    • this entry is presented as if it is a special piece of art
    • care was taken to make this presentation neat and clean

Judge 2
Balance – 5 Points
     • various elements of the design are well-balanced, neither too sparse nor too busy
    • the sum of the design is in harmony with the parts of the whole design

Design and Detail – 10 Points
    • the design enhances the theme
    • the design is well thought out
• the detail of design is clean and precise
    • the design has adequate detail

Dimension – 10 Points
    • the artwork is obvious and within the guidelines of 3-D rules
    • the dimension enhances the theme and is balanced
    • the design may not protrude more than 1” in height from the tip surface
    
Overall Impression – 10 Points
    • this entry makes an excellent overall impression
    • this entry is complete and needs no improvement

Judge 3
Complexity – 10 Points
    • the design is challenging, demanding skill and effort
    • the design involves multiple techniques

Workmanship – 10 Points
    • the overall quality of the work demonstrates outstanding artistic skills
    • the workmanship is neat, clean and precise

**Tip Length – 5 Points
• the tips are graduated in length and size
    • the length of tips must be no longer than 2”
    • the width may be no wider than ¾” if they were flattened out

Theme – 10 Points
    • the theme is obvious and completely developed
    • the theme is continued on all 10 nails
