Looking For “The One”

Learn how to keep your salon air clean.
These last few years have seen a growing concern for salon sanitation from both nail techs and clients alike, but most of that attention has centered on the cleanliness of tools and equipment. One area that’s starting to grab more of the spotlight is the quality of the air circulating in the salon, which unsurprisingly contains amounts of acetone, monomer and nail dust. Air purifiers aim to address that issue, and one in particular—The One That Works by Modern Solutions Incorporated—attacks dirty air in several technologically advanced ways.
“Air comes out of the unit like a fountain,” says Jeff Cardarella, president of Modern Solutions. “That makes it circulate throughout the salon, even to the corners. On low, the air in the entire salon is replaced four times per hour, and on high, it’s replaced six times per hour.” Other features are the special media inside the purifier that are specially formulated to pick up acetone and monomer vapors—even the ones you can’t necessarily smell. An eight-pound blended mixture of activated carbon and two other adsorbent products remove those chemicals as well as cigarette smoke, nail dust and pollen from the air. The foam dust filter is easily removed and machine washable.
Cardarella has served as an industry source for several consumer publications, including an article about salon air quality in The Oregonian newspaper earlier this year. Modern Solutions also provides guidance and training for those who purchase its purifiers, including nail techs that speak Vietnamese.
