There's only one thing our readers love more than the photos we feature in NAILPRO: behind-the-scenes snapshots! In our November 2010 issue, the Pint Sized Services Workshop details how to perform children's nail services properly. NAILPRO Senior Art Director Patty Quon-Sandberg caught some fun moments on film (or, on a digital memory card) of our model Tiana (also, Patty's daughter!) and her pamperer-of-the-day Mariel Pizarro, lead esthetician and nail technician at Rob/b OPI Concept Salon in Studio City, California. The wonderful people at Rob/b opened their doors and their nail stations to us for the photo shoot, and it turned out beautifully! (I must say, my favorite part of the salon—aside from the calming atmosphere—are the OPI polish-painted blocks that adorn the walls behind the nail stations. Genius!)
Because we usually host most of our photo shoots in the NAILPRO studios, it was a treat to travel offsite and set up camp at one of our favorite salons. We ran through the shoot in just a few quick hours!
9:45 a.m. I arrive at Rob/b 15 minutes early so I can introduce myself around. While I'm waiting for my team to arrive, I (once again, and every time I visit) am hypnotized by the wall of OPI nail polish choices. There are so many! I have a slight moment of panic when I realize that we haven't decided on a color to paint Tiana's nails for the shoot. And faced with so many choices, I can see it's going to take awhile to decide. Luckily, salon owner Robbie Schaeffer comes to us with the perfect suggestion: Catch Me In Your Net! The shimmering green shade is perfect for fall and for kids who love to experiment with fun colors.
10:00 a.m. The NAILPRO crew is here! Well, crew sounds like there is a load of us, but really it's me, Patty, Tiana and photo editor Armando Sanchez. Armando sets up the lights at our chosen nail station while Patty and I talk strategy, deciding exactly what shots we want and how we'll get them. We also pick out Tiana's wardrobe for the shoot—pink it is!
10:30 a.m. We meet our nail technician for the shoot, Mariel. She's just as excited as we are, and she walks us through the proper steps, both dos and don'ts, when it comes to services for kids. She makes it clear that Rob/b never pushes back or nips cuticles on kids.
11:00 a.m. The photos look great as Patty and I check them as they're being shot. This shoot is going so smoothly, it looks like we'll be done early! Some of the Rob/b clients are starting to get curious about what's going on and ask what this is for. NAILPRO, of course!
11:45 a.m. Mariel selects Cuckoo for this Color as the first layer of polish. It's perfect and is a beautiful pairing with the next layer of Catch Me in Your Net. Then, out come the decals!
12:15 p.m. The service is finished, and Tiana's nails are adorable. She's very excited to pose for the camera with her glamorous nails. But, oops! School starts tomorrow and the kids aren't allowed makeup or nail polish. But at least she'll get to sport some trendy nails at the dinner table!
12:30 p.m. Whoa, we're already finished and ready to pack up. This was such a great shoot. It went so smoothly, probably because of luck, but also because we came prepared for anything. I can already hear my stomach rumbling; it's time to grab some food and get back to NAILPRO. What a great way to spend the day—it definitely doesn't feel like work when you're having so much fun!
